Can you tell us about this track/release?
"Rodalies" refers to the regional commuter rail network in Catalonia, and let’s just say it doesn’t work quite as well as we’d like. The song is about falling in love while commuting and being so delusional that you romanticize even the most frustrating and uncomfortable reality. I’m fascinated by public transport as this often unnoticed third space. In my case, it separates different realities as I travel back and forth between Barcelona and my hometown. It feels very post-individual. Even though we hate depending on it, it’s a place that invites you to daydream and take a breath.
What's your process?
I’m pretty scrappy when it comes to making music—if it works, it works. I started out making EDM, so I probably follow a similar approach of stacking elements throughout the song, like a puzzle. Recently, I’ve been trying to incorporate more guitars and other instruments, but since I’m not the best at playing them, I either bring friends over to jam or chop up samples, which is always fun. I tend to get obsessed with a project, so I’ll often spend one night going eight hours deep into a track. I usually finish them in a few sessions over time.
Tell us about the scene in Barcelona.
It’s intense. I think everyone would agree that there’s always something going on. Even though we have some great venues, the city could use more small-capacity spaces for up-and-coming acts and smaller projects.
Who are your favorite local artists?
I’m probably biased here, but we’ve got such an interesting scene. I’d highly recommend checking out what others have suggested, you’ll discover some great stuff.
Who are your biggest influences?
Bands like Ivy, The Radio Dept., Pasteboard, and Els Pets have been huge influences on my recent work.
Any shoutouts?
Shoutout to you for making it all the way through! Glad you care. : ) Also, a big shoutout to independent shows, acts, parties, and venues—everyone who keeps culture and music alive. It’s hard work.
