Can you tell us a bit about this track?
Gün: This track is actually an excerpt from my upcoming album which is a collection of my live performances in Istanbul between 2022-2023. The album will be taking a transitional shape between two longer pieces of storytelling. I first performed it in a rather different form and length at the venue Gizli Bahçe in Beyoğlu, back in the summer of 2022.
What is the scene like in Turkey?
It is an emotional and musical map of islands, an archipelago of artists and collectives belonging to the same larger space. We meet, create together; go our own ways, create alone. When we finally meet again, we create joy and solidarity in our own temporary way. Emotions and sounds linger on; their echoes become much more consistent than our physical togetherness.
How does the scene affect your process?
The underground music scene in Istanbul showed me the wonderful routes to escape from the cruel perfectionist expectations I have for myself. Within these airy networks of solidarity, I learned the meaning of cooperation and coexistence as a musical human being. I learned how to not be afraid of my creations and shadows.
What are some of your influences?
Sound foraging, plus keeping it self-taught and technically simple, plus my highly dramatic and fearful emotional self.
Anything else you want to add?
“Gizli Bahçe” is a transition between two longer pieces of my album, which hopefully will be released in 2024. Thank you for having me on this compilation.
