The cellist, composer, and producer Oliver Coates might be best known by some for his soundtrack work. The London-based artist’s transportive compositions have provided sonic color to acclaimed movies like Aftersun and The Stranger. On Throb, shiver, arrow of time, his newest record for RVNG, Coates uses the cello as textural, harmonic, and melodic material, presenting the instrument raw and processed—isolated and in concert with electronics and outside collaborators. The record shimmers like 5G radiation inside of a Roman Catholic church. It’s a testament to the majesty of the cello throughout time.
