The physical version of ScanDisk by the London-based artist Partial Defrag comes packaged in anti-static hard drive bags. I have a memory of buying a 12” as a youth, perhaps released by a local Milwaukee IDM label, that came packaged in a similar anti-static container. Is ScanDisk an IDM release? I wouldn’t go that far—for those keeping score, it is probably closer to the “deconstructed club” idiom—but there is something that connects these two releases to me, which are separated by time and geography. This is prickly electronic music concerned with the material of digital sound. Partial Defrag says it best about their own music: “In the empty space of a semi-compressed hard drive."
